Rapid Access Guide to Internal Medicine: Companion to Kelley's Textbook of Internal Medicine
Published in Paperback by Lippincott Williams & Wilkins Publishers (October, 2000)
Authors: Paul L., MD Fine and Lapavitsas Fine
Average review score:

A wonderful resource
Dr. Fine is a superb clinician and a wise, humane practitioner and teacher. His ability to see and explain with clarity even the most complex of subjects shines through in this book. While it is a more strictly clinical book than his first ("The Wards") and therefore not as filled with his trademark compassion and understanding, "Rapid Access Guide to Internal Medicine" accomplishes its goal admirably. It is conscientiously and thoughtfully put together, a wonderful aid for any busy physician seeking that most elusive of resources: one that offers solid, dependable and insightful information in a quickly navigated format. "Rapid Access Guide to Internal Medicine" helps cement Dr. Fine's standing as a physician--and a communicator--of rare gifts. Highly recommended.

An excellent reference
This is one of the finest books relating to internal medicine I have read. It is brief, to the point and highlights the most important information one would need. I had trouble putting it down. I plan to order one for all my colleagues and family members.

The Rapids of Change: Social Entrepreneurship in Turbulent Times
Published in Hardcover by Knowledge Systems (March, 1987)
Author: Robert Theobald
Average review score:

VERY INTERESTING
I like his ideas as the quality of life is very important, life must not get too fast. There needs to be time to savour the environment, the beauty and the tides of life. .

excellent guide for anyone attempting to change public
I received this book as a review copy years ago in a newspaper office, and it has served in good stead through careers in government and consulting. "There is no shortage of money, only different priorities...You can't teach a person anything unless he already knows it (but lacks the confidence to act on change.)" This book is a bible and a comfort to those trying to effect change and enlighten large or small groups . I have purchased several copies for friends over the years.

Sauk Rapids and Benton County (Images of America)
Published in Paperback by Arcadia (July, 2002)
Authors: Ron Zurek and Ron Zurck
Average review score:

Sauk Rapids, county history come alive
What's the best way to get people interested in history? Pictures, of course.

Ronald Christopher Zurek pieces together almost 200 vintage photographs into a regional history in "Sauk Rapids and Benton County."

Going back as far as the 1850s, the book explores the industries, businesses and the people that have contributed to the area's growth.

James J. Hill's influence on the railroads and the tiny saloon that was to become Coborn's Superstore are just some of the highlights. Group portraits dominate the book, capturing the lifestyles of granite workers, young men leaving for World War II and operators connecting telephone conversations at the turn of the century. And we can't forget the Prohibition era federal officers reveling in their moonshine bust.

The Ojibwe American Indians who originally lived in the Benton County area serve as a brief introduction to the rest of the book. One chapter focuses on Sauk Rapids' fatal 1886 cyclone, with photos of the destruction.

A pleasant journey through Middle America's past
In "Images of America - Sauk Rapids and Benton County", Ronald Christopher Zurek has brought a collection of vintage photos and text into a cohesive history of the early years of that region of Minnesota. I have to admit that before reading this books I had no idea that sauerkraut was made in big wooden vats, but the photos from the Foley Pickle Factory certainly enlightened me. This book is a wonderful look into the past of a Midwestern small community. From the early Ojibwe and Sioux settlements to the daily life of the European settlers it fascinates us with high quality black and white photos.

The history of the railroads, the "Sauk Rapids Cyclone of 1886", the vintage family photos and all the other elements of this book should be a compass to the current residents of the Benton County proclaiming their heritage. The next time I pass through that region I shall have to spend time looking for the landmarks that still exist, and pondering the ones that have passed.

This book is "a keeper" and will be a welcome addition to my history collection.

Subway Lives: 24 Hours in the Life of the New York City Subway
Published in Hardcover by Crown Pub (October, 1991)
Authors: Jim Dwyer and David Groff
Average review score:

Wow!
Wow! This book is fantastic. I had to do some research on the subway system, so I dragged myself over to the library and grudgingly checked out a couple of books, figuring I would read them in small installments over the course of several weeks. Luckily for me, I opened this book first. I finished half of it before I went to bed that night. The mixture of personal life-stories, fascinating details and a great writing style makes this one of the best non-fiction books I have ever read.

Surprisingly riveting, intriguingly detailed.
Surprise! Here's a book that not only intrigues with impressionistic detail of the New York City transit system, but that also provides a valuable lesson into how the most complex city in the U.S. lives and breathes. I took it with me on jury duty and it more than carried me through the tedium of long hours of nothingness with my peers. Jim Dwyer has X-ray vision when it comes to looking at the inner workings of the Big Apple.

Comprehensive, compassionate and easy to use.
Our Church began a community Bereavement Support Group last year using the Bereavement Ministry book. We found it to be extremely helpful. Ater gathering persons from our parish who had experienced different losses to be facilitators and having a few informational meetings we were quickly prepared to meet the needs of our community through the sessions the book had planned. With this book we have reached and shared our ministry with a large number of people. It can be used for all faiths and even includes questions for each session to use in small group sharing. Everything you need to get started in Bereavement Ministry is in this book. Very well done.

Creating the Resilient Organization: A Rapid Response Management Program
Published in Hardcover by Prentice Hall Trade (June, 1995)
Author: Edward Deevy
Average review score:

A process that works in turning older companies around.
When I read this common sense approach in what it would take to turn an establish company around. I thought, that their was finally someone who understood the human side of organizations. That all the intellectual knowledge, was not sufficient in dealing with real people in real jobs. A very practical real life insight in dealing with companies who have a long history of mistrust of management. That the 3 stages to this process, was so simple, yet offen not seen by top management. I think perhaps that it is painfully for them to really listen to what their workers are saying. That a lot of managers are more committed in keeping their power than risk empowering their work force, for the fear of losing control. Which very act suppress the creative juices and brain power of their organizations.

Evolution of New York City Subways: An Illustrated History of New York City's Transit Cars, 1867-1997
Published in Hardcover by Johns Hopkins Univ Pr (April, 2002)
Authors: Gene Sansone and Clifton Hood
Average review score:

NYC Subway Fan's Delight!!!
I'm a native New Yorker, born in Brooklyn and raised in Queens, so the NYC subway system means a great deal to me. I'm also a railfan, so my interests in the inner workings of the IND, BMT, and IRT run very deep as well. That's why I can say that Evolution of New York City Subways truly is a subway fan's delight. Gene Sansone has written an incredibly fact-filled, engaging chronicle of the rolling stock of the MTA and its predecessors, as only an insider can. The comprehensive text is accompanied by excellent interior and exterior photos, plus detailed diagrams and specifications. I predict that this book will soon become the reference standard on this subject. I sincerely urge all subway fans to get a copy immediately: they won't be able to put it down!
